Hands and Hearts

In Europe, people greet each other by kissing on the cheeks; for example, they might kiss twice - first on the left cheek and then on the right. Some even kiss three times: left, right, left.

In central Portugal, there is a place near Alentejo where when temperature reaches over 40 degrees Celsius in summer, people then think it is an apocalyptic sign then start to sing some ancient songs. Near this area lies a lake with a village on the other side.

The village is less hot and have a greeting etiquette: one person gently shake the other's left hand before moving to kiss their left earlobe (the part below the ear). Sometimes this kissing may even involve gentle biting with teeth. While in general culture such actions express intimacy, there are no religious or any hidden implications.

Instead, people use this form of greeting – kissing another’s left earlobe – as a way to bring their hearts physically closest possible.
